This course provides essential fire safety training specifically for the healthcare environment. It examines common fire hazards found in facilities, the different types of fires, and the correct methods for extinguishing them. The training emphasizes the critical importance of prevention, hazard recognition, and proper response during a fire emergency to protect vulnerable populations.

Highlights of This Training:
  • The three elements of the “fire triangle” (Heat, Fuel, and Oxidizer) and how removing one extinguishes a fire.
  • The five classes of fire (A, B, C, D, and K) and their common sources in a healthcare setting.
  • How to select the correct fire extinguisher and identify multipurpose (ABC) units.
  • Proper use of a fire extinguisher using the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
  • Common fire hazards, including electrical dangers, ‘hot work,’ careless smoking, and improper storage of flammable materials.
  • Key fire prevention strategies, such as managing clutter, electrical safety, and handling oily rags.
  • Emergency evacuation procedures and the RACE strategy (Rescue, Alarm/Act, Confine, Extinguish/Evacuate).
By the end of the course you will have learned:
  • To recognize the components required for a fire to start and continue burning.
  • To identify the different classes of fire and the appropriate extinguishing agent for each.
  • How to demonstrate the four-step PASS method for operating a fire extinguisher.
  • To identify and mitigate common fire hazards in your work area, including electrical, chemical, and kitchen-related risks.
  • How to apply the RACE protocol in the event of a fire emergency.
  • The correct procedure for evacuating a building safely, including identifying multiple routes, avoiding smoke inhalation, and reporting to an assembly area.
