In a warehouse environment, staying safe means being informed. This course provides a comprehensive overview of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as mandated by OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM). You will learn how the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) standardizes hazardous material information across the globe using clear language and universal pictograms. By understanding how these documents are organized, you will be better prepared to handle chemicals safely, use the correct protective equipment, and respond effectively to workplace emergencies.

  • Understand the purpose of the Hazard Communication Standard and the role of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
  • Identify where to locate Safety Data Sheets in the facility or while on the road.
  • Recognize the 16 standard sections of an SDS and the specific type of information found in each.
  • Learn to quickly identify chemical hazards using signal words, hazard statements, and pictograms.
  • Discover how to use SDS information to determine proper handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
  • Understand the importance of technical data, such as Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) and stability information.

By the end of the course, you will have learned:

  • How to identify a material’s official name, supplier contact information, and emergency telephone numbers in Section 1.
  • The difference between “Warning” and “Danger” signal words and how to interpret hazard pictograms.
  • The critical first-aid measures and emergency procedures for accidental exposure, fires, or spills found in the high-priority first six sections.
  • How to select the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and understand engineering controls like ventilation and eyewash stations.
  • The significance of a material’s physical properties and reactivity to prevent uncontrolled chemical reactions.
  • How to find specialized technical information regarding toxicology, ecological impact, and transportation requirements.
