Working with hazardous materials requires a high level of awareness and preparedness to ensure workplace safety. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM) and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), focusing specifically on the importance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Participants will explore how these standardized documents are organized, where to find critical information during an emergency, and how to utilize technical data to maintain a safe environment for themselves and their coworkers.

  • The Role of HAZCOM and GHS: Understand the OSHA standards that mandate the right to know and how the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System creates a universal language for chemical safety.
  • SDS Organization: Learn the significance of the 16-section numbered format and why information is presented in a “first things first” priority order.
  • Emergency Response Preparedness: Identify which sections contain immediate life-saving information, including first aid measures, firefighting procedures, and accidental release protocols.
  • Preventative Safety Measures: Discover how to find guidance on safe handling, storage conditions, and the specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for different substances.
  • Technical and Regulatory Data: Gain insight into the more specialized sections of an SDS, such as toxicological effects, ecological impact, and disposal considerations.

  • Where to find technical details regarding a material’s physical properties, stability, and reactivity to prevent accidents before they occur.
