Hand, Wrist and Finger Safety in Transportation and Warehouse Environments
This course provides essential training on protecting your hands, wrists, and fingers from workplace injuries in warehouse and transportation environments. You’ll learn about the anatomy of your hands and why they’re vulnerable to damage, as well as the traumatic and ergonomic hazards you face when handling packages, operating equipment, and driving. The course covers pre-work preparation, safe work practices with hand and power tools, proper lifting and driving techniques, and how to select and use personal protective equipment effectively.
- Understanding hand anatomy and the vulnerabilities of bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves
- Identifying common warehouse and transportation hazards including moving machinery, conveyor belts, chains, truck doors, spinning equipment, and hot or cold surfaces
- Preparing mentally and physically before beginning tasks to prevent distracted or rushed work
- Recognizing pinch points and other hazards in warehouses and on loading sites
- Inspecting tools and equipment for damage and ensuring guards and safety devices are functional
- Using proper lifting techniques when handling packages and heavy items
- Recognizing and avoiding ergonomic hazards such as repetitive motions, awkward positions, and excessive force
- Understanding truck driver-specific risks including carpal tunnel syndrome from vehicle vibrations and repetitive tasks like chaining, tarping, and steering
- Maintaining a loose grip on the steering wheel to reduce stress on fingers and wrists
- Applying correct grip techniques: power grip for strength tasks and precision grip for delicate work
- Selecting tools with properly sized handles that allow for neutral wrist positions and comfortable use
- Managing vibration exposure from power tools to prevent hand-arm vibration syndrome
- Choosing appropriate gloves for specific hazards including cuts, heat, chemicals, biological materials, and fuel handling
By the end of the course, you will have learned:
- How to identify hazards that can cause hand, wrist, and finger injuries in warehouse and transportation settings
- Safe work practices to prevent both traumatic injuries and cumulative ergonomic damage
- How to select and properly use hand and power tools that minimize strain and injury risk
- Techniques for maintaining neutral wrist positions and using appropriate grip styles for different tasks
- Driving practices that protect against carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress injuries
- How to choose the right protective gloves for the specific hazards you encounter, including safe options for fueling trucks
- When to stop work and seek help to avoid injury from excessive force or unfamiliar equipment
