Exposure to harmful substances remains a leading cause of workplace injury, making it vital for employees to understand the hazardous materials present in their environment. This training explores the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard, detailing the evolution from the 1983 “Right to Know” regulation to the 2024 “Final Rule” update which establishes the “Right to Understand.” Participants will examine the critical requirements for labeling, hazard classification, and safety data sheets to ensure they can handle dangerous chemicals safely and effectively.

  • Key updates in the 2024 OSHA Final Rule and the “Right to Understand”
  • The three primary sources of hazmat information: Safety Data Sheets (SDS), GHS container labels, and written communication programs
  • Differences between acute and long-term exposure, including dose and duration
  • Common routes of entry for hazardous substances: inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact
  • Classification of health hazards including toxins, corrosives, irritants, and carcinogens
  • Physical hazard categories such as flammables, combustibles, explosives, and oxidizers
  • Proper selection and usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Best practices for safe storage, spill containment, and emergency response
By the end of the course, you will have learned:
  • Identify the requirements of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for labeling chemicals.
  • Locate and interpret critical information on a Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
  • Recognize the symptoms of exposure to various industrial toxins and corrosives.
  • Distinguish between flammable and combustible materials based on flashpoint temperatures.
  • Apply correct first aid procedures for skin contact, eye exposure, inhalation, or ingestion of hazardous materials.
  • Implement proper spill containment strategies to prevent environmental contamination.
