This course provides essential training on fire prevention and safety in hazardous waste operations (HAZWOPER) environments. Participants will learn how fires start, how to identify and mitigate fire hazards, and how to respond effectively in case of a fire emergency.

Key Learning Points:

  • Understanding Fire Hazards: Learn how hazardous materials increase fire risks and why chemical fires require specialized firefighting techniques.
  • Fire Triangle and Fire Behavior: Understand the three essential elements of fire—heat, fuel, and oxygen—and how removing one can extinguish a fire.
  • Classification of Fires:
    • Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, textiles)
    • Class B: Flammable liquids and gases (gasoline, propane)
    • Class C: Electrical fires (wiring, equipment)
    • Class D: Combustible metals (sodium, magnesium)
  • Fire Prevention Strategies: Learn how to store, handle, and transport flammable and combustible materials safely.
  • Identifying and Controlling Ignition Sources: Understand how sparks, open flames, friction, and static electricity can ignite fires and how to minimize these risks.
  • Safe Handling of Hazardous Materials: Explore best practices for storing chemicals in approved containers, grounding flammable liquids, and using non-sparking tools.
  • Fire Suppression Methods: Learn how to use chemical foams, dry sand, and firefighting agents appropriate for different fire classes.
  • Emergency Response and Evacuation:
    • How to sound the alarm and respond immediately in case of fire.
    • Proper use of fire extinguishers using the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
    • Evacuation procedures, including checking for hot doors, avoiding smoke inhalation, and assembling at designated meeting points.
  • Personal Fire Safety Techniques: Understand how to “Stop, Drop, and Roll” if clothing catches fire and how to minimize exposure to toxic smoke.

By the End of This Course, You Will Have Learned:

  • How to identify and eliminate fire hazards in HAZWOPER environments.
  • Proper storage and handling of flammable and combustible materials.
  • The different classes of fires and the appropriate extinguishing methods.
  • How to safely evacuate during a fire emergency and avoid toxic smoke inhalation.
  • When to fight a fire using an extinguisher and when to evacuate for safety.

This training equips workers with the knowledge and skills to prevent, control, and respond to fires in hazardous environments, ensuring workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
