Excavator Safety Training

Excavators are among the most powerful and versatile machines on any construction site, but operating them safely requires a thorough understanding of their components, hazards, and proper procedures. This course covers everything from the basic anatomy of an excavator to pre-shift inspections, safe operation techniques, slope and stability rules, and the responsibilities of a ground spotter — giving operators and workers the knowledge they need to prevent serious injuries and fatalities on the job.

• Overview of excavator components, including the cab, bucket, boom, tracks, and protective systems such as ROPS and FOPS, and how each part functions during operation
• Differences between excavator types — standard, dragline, mini, long-reach, and wheeled — and how to select the right type for your project
• How to distinguish excavators from similar equipment like backhoes, and why knowing the difference matters for job site safety
• Common causes of tip-over accidents, including overloading, poor ground conditions, and operating on steep slopes, along with the 70% rule for safe slope operation
• Recognition and prevention of struck-by, crushing, and collision hazards, including proper use of backup alarms, horns, and right-of-way rules
• Safe practices around overhead power lines and underground utilities, including what to do if your excavator contacts a live power line
• How to conduct a thorough pre-shift inspection, including checking fluid levels, hydraulic cylinders, controls, lights, backup alarms, and parking brakes
• Safe mounting and dismounting procedures using three points of contact, and the importance of seat belt use
• Proper driving techniques, including gradual turns, pivot turns, two-speed travel mode, and keeping the bucket low during travel
• Safe excavating and trenching practices, including bucket swing radius awareness and the proper use of trench boxes
• Safe shutdown and parking procedures, including cooling down the engine and selecting appropriate parking locations
• Spotter responsibilities, including pre-operation communication, hand signal protocols, blind spot awareness, and maintaining safe positioning during excavator movement
